Seasonal Botanicals

Last mini class for 2025! Let’s draw or paint small scale seasonal botanicals! You’re welcome to mix media or stick with your favorite. You will learn how to create a watercolor wash as a foundation and then apply other mediums on top: graphite, pens or color pencils. As small bonus learn about creating small compositions, if you wish to make a card with your artwork.

OUTLINE:

Week 1 - poinsettias, holly or botanical of your choice

Week 2 - mistletoe, yew, winterberries or botanical of your choice

Week 3 - holiday theme design (animals or birds welcome)

WHAT YOU NEED

Paper suggestions:

Hot press paper if you’re intending on painting with watercolor or gouache, and drawing (arches hot-press paper, Fabriano Artistico hot-press paper, or equivalent 9” x 12” paper)
Cold press paper for watercolor mostly (Arches is great!)
Bristol smooth for graphite, ink, color pencil (even charcoal)

Medium suggestions:
Graphite pencils - HB, 2B, 6B
Pens, such as Micron pens, Pentel brush pen, Pentel Hybrid Arts Technica pen or Ballpoint pens
Color pencils - my favorite are Faber Castel Polychromos pencils.
Watercolors for underpainting or some finishing touches - I love Daniel Smith collection: yellow ochre, burnt sienna, sap green, cobalt blue, indigo to name a few colors. Granulating watercolors are wonderful for adding extra effects.
Gouache - optional but fun for painting opaque layers. For example, white or black.
Brushes - small to medium. Personal favorite: Silver Black Velvet brushes no 4, 8, 12.
Eraser, sharpener.
Others: charcoal, inks, etc

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts, I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our lesson together, including reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of artworks, demo techniques and also create art pieces for you to either follow or be inspired by. Then we sit and paint/draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback, and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

As a bonus receive free access to open studio while workshop is under way. When class starts, I will send you an email with a link.

There is a $35 cancellation fee. No refunds for cancellations received less than two weeks before the day of the workshop.

Please email Maja if you have any questions.
