ART FOR GOOD - from sketchbook to final artwork

This class is about focusing your creative efforts towards a cause close to your heart: a bird organization, local community garden, a bee conservation project, forest rehabilitation, cat/dog shelter or something else. Big or small - your choice! This class will help you take your heartfelt ideas and turn them into final artworks - drawn or painted or both! Walk away with one or two pieces that you’re proud of. You can gift them, donate them, make cards, stickers or t-shirts, submit your work for a show or anything else you like!

Some suggestions for organizations (any welcome):

  • Birds: National Audubon society, Alaska Raptor Center

  • Forest & Land: Nature conservancy, Crown bees (Mason bee project)

  • Rewilding: Hoja Nueva, Wolf Haven International

  • Domestic animals: Seattle humane or similar

  • Sea: Oceana, Orca conservancy

OUTLINE:

Week 1 - Inside your sketchbook: project discussion, gathering ideas, drawing thumbnail compositions.

Week 2 - Inside your sketchbook: preliminary sketches or paintings from collected images/references.

Week 3 - Inside your sketchbook: experimenting with color, mark making, choosing process (supplies), backgrounds (any style welcome).

Week 4 - Small artwork on final paper or other substrate.

Week 5 - Starting to work on final artwork(s) - a series, small, medium or large.

Week 6 - Finalizing project.

WHAT YOU NEED:

A sketchbook or sketchpad of your choice. I use Stillman and Birn Zeta sketchbook for mixed media. Strathmore drawing paper pad is good for graphite or charcoal drawings. Robert Bateman sketchbook can also be nice for preliminary sketching and light color.
Tracing paper, an LED light tablet or transfer (carbon) paper if you would like to trace.

Final paper for art depending on what you would like to do:

  • Bristol smooth (for pen, graphite, color pencils, charcoal)

  • Strathmore drawing paper (for graphite, charcoal)

  • Clairefontein Pastelmat (for soft pastels, color pencils, gouache)

  • Arches coldpress, Canson xl watercolor paper (watercolors)

  • Fabriano Artistico white hot press paper (watercolors, gouache, color pencil, graphite and pen)

Medium suggestions:
Graphite pencils - HB, 2B
Pens, such as Micron pens, Pentel brush pen, Pentel Hybrid Arts Technica pen or Ballpoint pens
Color pencils - my favorite are Faber Castel Polychromos pencils.
Watercolors for underpainting or some finishing touches - I love Daniel Smith collection: yellow ochre, burnt sienna, sap green, cobalt blue, indigo to name a few colors. Granulating watercolors are wonderful for adding extra effects.
Gouache - optional but fun for painting opaque layers. For example, white or black.
Brushes - small to medium. Personal favorite: Silver Black Velvet brushes no 4, 8, 12.
Eraser, sharpener.
Others: charcoal, inks, etc

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts, I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our lesson together, including reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of artworks, demo techniques and also create art pieces for you to either follow or be inspired by. Then we sit and paint/draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback, and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

As a bonus receive free access to open studio while workshop is under way. When class starts, I will send you an email with a link.

There is a $35 cancellation fee. No refunds for cancellations received less than two weeks before the day of the workshop.

Please email Maja if you have any questions.
