Seeing & Drawing Nature

Learn how to see, really see nature with all its forms, lights, shadows, textures and beauty. And then learn how to shade it in a medium of your choice - from pen, graphite pencils to charcoal. If you’re a beginner or would like to refresh your artistic knowledge about shading forms in nature, this is workshop for you. You will learn about basic forms, proportions, perspective on form and more. What forms and shapes make up a flower, a tree, an animal or a bird? How do you draw an ellipse and how big should it be? Are you looking up or down on something? I will answer all your questions to help you improve your ability to see, understand and draw. Then we’ll focus on shading and creating tonal values so that your forms look like they can leap off the paper. Walk away with a small series of beautiful drawings.

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts, I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our lesson together, including reference images for you to work from. There will be a demo and then we sit and draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

WHAT YOU NEED (choose one medium or all):

Bristol paper (ideally) or drawing paper suited for the medium of your choice. Sometimes printer paper does the trick and takes the pressure off so that you can focus on practice.
Graphite pencils - ideally a few hard and soft pencils (H and B range)
Charcoal - willow sticks (soft) and compressed charcoal pencils. Charcoal powder is fun too (optional).
Eraser - variety is always nice: kneadable eraser is best! Plastic erasers are also welcome.
Sharpener
Blending stick
Pens - Pigma Micron pens - variety of sizes 0.1 - 0.5 Other pens welcome too.

Please email Maja if you have any questions.
