Mixed Media Expressions

Learn to mix and match different mediums to create drawings or paintings specific to you. Each week we’ll work on a theme (home or garden, botanicals, animals or critters, memories) with different demos so that you can find a fit perfect for you.

What you’ll learn:

  • Different types of mark making, including how to hold your brush or pen.

  • How to layer, which medium over which. Where to draw black & white or color. Compositions, etc.

  • Materials: types of paper suitable for variety of mediums, which paint to use etc.

  • How to paint and mix media: how to mix paint, wet on wet, wet on dry. You’ll also learn graphite pencils, different pens and color pencils techniques.

What you need:

Drawing or painting or both. Select ones applicable to your needs:

  • Stillman & Birn zeta sketchbook or Arches hot press paper 140lbs or Canson XL watercolor cold press paper pad 140gsm/300lbs 9 x 12”. Bristol Smooth can be great for pen, graphite and color pencil - not suitable for watercolor though.

  • Brush: watercolor round no 8 (Silver Black Velvet Round Brush with short handle or equivalent). Small round brush for details, no 0. Winsor & Newton Cotmans or Princeton brushes are good option. An old brush (cheap oil brush for texture), flat brush can be great for really big washes. 1/2 - 1” in width.

  • Watercolors: Daniel Smith watercolors - tubes or pans. I demo with Daniel Smith tube paints. One tube of granulating paint recommended but optional!

  • Ceramic palette: a white dinner plate can work wonderfully. Plastic palettes are no good.

  • Paper towels, a container for water, spray bottle.

  • Graphite pencils and kneaded eraser.

  • Faber Castel Polychromos pencils or Prismacolor.

  • Micron pens, Pigma FB sakura pen, dip or fountain pen - use your favorite.

  • Hairdryer if you’re painting.

  • Optional: artist tape, salt, saran wrap/plastic wrap, rice, linguini, cheesecloth, masking fluid, watercolor pencils. Gouache paints, mulberry paper or rice paper, inks, glue, scissors.

Before class begins you will be sent a Zoom link for the workshop as well as any reference images you might need. We will meet online every week. This class is for all levels. We are going to play, paint and explore deeply to enhance our creative practice. All classes will be recorded and available for watching up to 1 month after the class ends.

If you have any questions, you’re welcome to email.
I look forward to painting and drawing with you!
